U.N. Report: Governments Failing to Harness Volunteer Power

While more than 1 billion people donate their time for causes worldwide, many governments are not tapping the potential of volunteers to boost development efforts and effect change on issues ranging from corruption to climate, according to a United Nations analysis of volunteerism and governance, the Thomson Reuters Foundation reports.

The State of the World’s Volunteerism Report 2015, the first such global study, comes a few months ahead of U.N. members’ expected adoption of new international development goals to replace the expiring Millennium Development Goals. “Volunteers have been claiming rights and raised awareness among politicians. Any new development agenda must have space for civic engagement,” said Amanda Mukwashi of United Nations Volunteers, the report’s author.
